"Nervous, full of gallantry,
so obedient that they seem
to outguess the rider's
intentions; high thin head,
long wind loose manes,
elevated movements and a
striking agility challenging
all threats and dangers
with indomitable courage."
-Manuel Veiga, describing
his Lusitano horses
"Everything was offered by the race itself: wonderful fine slightly convex
heads today known as the "Veiga head", ancient rare colors...fine flat legs
with strong hocks, flexible backs, uncommon impulsion, beautiful
malleable necks...in short, the race offered him (Mr. Veiga) a horse that
makes our horse loving people vibrate."
-Alfredo Baptista Coelho, on the selection criteria for Lusitanos
Damasco 1985 Bay Lusitano Stallion (Malmequer x Xaquema)
15/3 hh. Imported from Portugal by his previous owner, Damasco's Portuguese revision
score was 81.5. He is an amazing 100% Veiga-blooded breeding stallion - while extremely
consanguinous, he has correct conformation, size and bone, large impeccable feet, and
reproductive vitality. His ardent, discerning temperament, beautiful movement, and
tremendous presence round out the package, and make him the heart of our breeding
program.
Xaquiro 2003 Black Lusitano Stallion (Damasco x Pistola)
15/1 hh. Xaquiro is over 3/4 Veiga blood, and has outstanding, "typey" conformation, and
an amazingly easy temperament. We are enjoying watching him mature....
Opala 1995 Heterozygous-grey Lusitano Mare (Elieto x Granada Da Capela)
15 hh. Imported from Portugal by her previous owner, Opala is 5/8 Veiga-blooded, and
has a remarkably classical Veiga-Lusitano appearance and temperament. Her athleticism
and desire to please are exceptional. We were very impressed with her sire, Elieto, in
Portugal, and with the cookie-cutter consistency of Opala's offspring by Damasco. Opala is
in the Livro de Nascimentos in Portugal, and is eligible for Portuguese revision.
Montana Lusitanos
Bar L7 Ranch
Choteau, Montana
The focus of our breeding program is the classical Lusitano. Over thousands of years, the Portuguese, especially the Manuel Veiga family, have carefully selected Lusitanos for functionality, particularly traits that made the Lusitano ideal for battle, the bullfight, and the haute ecole. We seek those same traits today, for the discerning rider who desires an intelligent, willing, athletic partner in work or sport.

15/1.5 hh. We recently purchased Pirana, who was imported by a previous owner. By
Centenario from Mexico, and the Portuguese mare, Guapa, she is a rare find amongst
mares in North America with approximately 7/8 Veiga blood. We are looking forward to
her first Damasco foal. She is eligible for revision and registration in Portugal.
